Hidalgo County is one of the southernmost counties in the state of Texas with an approximate population of 800,000 residents. It lies against the United State-Mexico border and is characterized by a hot and humid subtropical climate. Temperatures reach well over 100°F frequently during the summer months, and winters also remain warm in the 60s and 70s.

Hidalgo County’s county seat is the town of Edinburg and its largest city is McAllen. The county was named after a priest who called for Mexico’s independence from Spain, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla. Today it is one of America’s fastest growing counties.

An Agricultural Powerhouse

In the 1980s, over 90% of the area in Hidalgo County was being used for agricultural cultivation. Its main exports were sorghum, cotton, corn, and vegetables. It was one of Texas’ most proliferous producers of cabbage, onions, cantaloupes, carrots, and watermelons. Many farmers also raise and slaughter cattle, milk cows, and hogs. In more recent years, the oil and petroleum industry has become a large producer.
